LG unveils premium designer mobile phones

Targets 10 per cent market share in the GSM segment

HIGH-END FORAY: A new LG mobile Black Label series, The Chocolate, being launched in New Delhi on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: LG Electronics India Pvt. Limited (LGEIL) announced its foray into the premium designer segment of mobile phones with the launch of "The Chocolate" at an entry-level price of Rs. 16,000, targeting a 10 per cent share in the GSM market.

The model KG-800, The Chocolate, is the first handset introduced by the company in its "Black Label" series of designer mobile phones. LG GSM mobile phones would be marketed in 15 major cities at select outlets in the first phase, followed by its introduction in other areas, National Product Group Head, H. S. Bhatia, told media persons here on Tuesday on the occasion of the company's entry into the high-end segment.

He said the company planned to introduce 6-8 more variants of the same model under the series in the next 3-6 months, adding that they had already sold five lakh units of the new model in South Korea since its launch last November.

"LG currently has a 3.5 per cent market share in the GSM mobile segment and with this launch the company expects to capture about 10 per cent of GSM market share in India by 2007", Mr. Bhatia said.

LG Sales and Marketing Vice-President, Girish V. Rao, said, "The LG Chocolate phone is aimed at users who value both style and technology".

According to him, the company is expected to grow by 300 per cent in the GSM handset business and will increase the number of dealers to 20,000 from 11,000 in the same business and enhance its turnover from Rs. 7,500 crore in 2005-06 to Rs. 9,000 crore in the current fiscal.
