Agni-III fiasco

The editorial "Agni-III stumbles on its first flight" (July 11) is thoughtfully cast. True, missiles themselves are not going to win peace between India and its neighbours. For peace to prevail, India should take into confidence its neighbours.

On the technical aspect, separation dynamics at high mach numbers must be a challenging problem. The reason for the separation failure of the first stage from the second could be attributed to inadequate number of ground tests or lack of `simulation studies.' When a number of new technologies are involved, DRDO is expected to do enough homework before going to the launch pad.

Thangam Chelladurai,
Tirunelveli, T.N.

The failure of the advanced long-range ballistic missile on its maiden flight is disappointing. But it should not deter our scientists from coming up with better designs and a successful launch of the missile in the near future. For India to have a credible nuclear deterrent, a missile of this range is absolutely necessary.

The failure must spur the scientists to aim even higher and prove the sceptics wrong.

Abhishek Mishra,
New Delhi
