Agricultural activities pick up in Dharwad

More than 75 per cent of the sowing has been completed


  • Cottonseeds have been sown in 15,122 hectares out of the target of 16,375
  • Highest percentage of sowing has been completed in Kalghatgi taluk
  • Kundagol has recorded a lowest percentage of sowing

    DHARWAD: The agricultural activities in Dharwad district have picked up and more than 75 per cent of the sowing has been completed. In the wake of a good monsoon, the Agriculture Department had set a target of sowing 1,89,990 hectares in the kharif season. Sowing has been completed in 1,46,331 hectares, registering an achievement of 77 per cent.

    S.V. Chandrashekhar, Joint Director of the Agriculture Department, has said that cottonseeds have been sown in 15,122 hectares out of the target of 16,375 hectares and oil seeds have been sown in 46,183 hectares out of the target of 60,925 hectares.

    In the district, the highest percentage of sowing has been completed in Kalghatgi taluk (90 per cent) and Kundagol has recorded a lowest sowing of 57 per cent, Mr. Chandrashekhar has said.

    Sowing

    The taluk-wise details of sowing (in hectares) is as follows: (the target and the percentage have been given in the brackets) Dharwad- 43,941 (50,450; 87 per cent); Hubli- 27,321 (32.285; 85 per cent); Kalghatgi- 33,298 (37,155; 90 per cent); Kundgol- 14,528 (25,475; 57 per cent); Navalgund- 27,243 (44,625; 61 per cent).

    Rainfall

    However, the district has registered less than the average rainfall during the period from January to July 7. Mr. Chandrashekhar said the district received an average rainfall of 387 mm during this period.

    However, this time it has received only 332.8 mm of rainfall. The district registered a rainfall of 582.5 mm in the corresponding period of last year, he said.

    The details of taluk-wise rainfall and average rainfall is as follows: Dharwad- 453.3 (426.6); Hubli- 339.2 (333.4); Kalghatgi- 387.3 (516.2); Kundgol- 275 (409.6); and Navalgund- 208.9 (253.2).
