Film on Sonia: Congress slaps legal notice

Special Correspondent

"Party's consent not obtained"

  • Proposed movie to be based on book by Rashid Kidwai
  • Book itself "is not an authorised biography" of Ms. Gandhi
  • Noticees misrepresenting that venture had tacit support of the party

NEW DELHI: Voicing concern and "surprise" over the move to make a "biographical" film on Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party slapped a legal notice on those behind the venture.

The proposed movie is to be based on a book by Rashid Kidwai.

The movie's director, producer and the book's author had been told that the movie, a purported biographical account of Ms. Gandhi's life, was sought to be produced without seeking the consent of either the Congress or its chief.

The Congress said it "denies, refutes and challenges the accuracy" of the proposed venture, which it claimed was not, in any manner, "a fair or correct portrayal" of Ms. Gandhi's life.

It said the book itself had clarified that it was not an authorised biography of Ms. Gandhi. By embarking on this venture, the noticees were not only indulging in "dissemination of false and misleading information, but also wrongfully misrepresenting that the venture had the tacit support" of the Congress party and its president.

The party asked the noticees to "desist from making such misleading claims regarding authorisation, approval or consent, tacit, implied or explicit" and said they reserved all rights to take appropriate legal action against them vis-à-vis any steps already taken or to be adopted in future.

Notices were served on Jagmohan Mundra, Sunanda Murli Manohar and Mr. Kidwai, director, producer and author of the film respectively.
