Congress welcomes court decision
Special Correspondent
AHMEDABAD:
Leader of the opposition in the Gujarat Assembly, Arjun Modhvadia, welcomed the Supreme Court's decision asking the Delhi High Court to appoint officials to review 10 major 2002 communal-riot related cases for reinvestigation.
In a statement, Mr. Modhvadia accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of being behind the conspiracy to flare-up communal passion for narrow political ends. He said review of the cases would also bring to book some government and police officials who took instructions directly from the chief minister's office during the riots and helped "spread" communal violence instead of trying to bring the situation under control.
He claimed that in most riot-related cases, actual perpetrators of the crime were not booked by the police and instead innocent people were arrested. Most of the 5,000-odd people held in jails in connection with the riots were innocent while the real criminals enjoyed political protection, he alleged.
