Second meeting on Indi lift irrigation project today

    BIJAPUR: The high-level meeting called by Minister for Water Resources, K.S. Eshwarappa in Bangalore on Monday with regard to farmers' demand for implementation of Indi (Guttibasavanna) Lift Irrigation Scheme was inconclusive. It was decided to hold an extended sitting on Wednesday.

    Following this, the Indi Etha Neeravari Horata Samiti, which had been agitating on the issue at Thamba village in Indi taluk for the last 43 days, decided to postpone the proposed indefinite strike till Thursday. They were to begin an indefinite fast on Wednesday. Samiti president Mallaiah Sarangamath, told The Hindu that the future course of agitation would depend on the outcome of the meeting. A rally would be held on Wednesday.

    Minister for Major Industries, Katta Subramanya Naidu, who is also district in-charge Minister; Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Govind Karjol; Bijapur MP, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal; MLAs from the district, Appasaheb Pattanashetti, Shivanand Patil and R.K. Rathod; MLC, S.R. Patil; zilla panchayat members, Panchappa Kalburgi, Danappa Kattimani and Siddu Patil; Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Water Resources, A.K.M. Naik; Managing Director of Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited (KBJNL), A.P. Joshi; Technical Adviser to State cell on Interstate River Water Disputes, Sriramaiah; Deputy Commissioner (Bijapur), Mohammad Mohsin; and Superintendent of Police, Seemant Kumar Singh and a few officials took part in the meeting presided over by Mr. Eshwarappa.

    The Minister directed the KBJNL managing director to utilise the services of retired engineers who worked in Upper Krishna Project, and invite them to the meeting.
