Belgaum
Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: Acting within 24 hours of the clearance given for a medical college in Belgaum by Medical Council of India (MCI) on Monday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday granted permission for the college to have an annual intake of 100 students from the academic session 2006-07 (under Section 10(A) of IMC Act, 1956, as amended). The college, which is coming up on the district hospital premises here, has been named as Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS). The permission granted for setting up the colleges and admission of students is initially for one year. It will be renewed yearly on verification of achievement of the annual target set out in the project report. The process of annual renewal will be continued till the establishment of the medical college and the expansion of hospital facilities are completed as per the norms of the MCI. The MCI had cleared the proposal for setting up government colleges only in respect of Belgaum and Mandya, and recommended to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to grant permission to these colleges on Monday. Former Agriculture Minister Prakash B. Hukkeri, who was instrumental in setting up the college, rushed to New Delhi on Tuesday to pursue the Health Ministry for immediate action on the recommendation. He also faxed the copy of the Letter of Permission for the BIMS to media offices in Belgaum.
Conditions
In the Letter of Permission issued by S.K. Mishra, Under Secretary, Government of India, the college shall not admit more than one batch of students. The college shall also apply to the MCI for renewal of permission before the commencement of the next academic session. While applying for such renewal, the achievements in terms of infrastructure, staff and equipment as spelt out in the time-bound action plan and as required by MCI norms should be clearly indicated. The next batch of students shall not be admitted unless the Union Government renewed permission. Also, the admission process for the academic year 2006-07 has to be completed in accordance with the time schedule indicated in the Graduations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, as amended. BIMS principal Gurumurthy was not available for comment.
Mandya college
Bangalore Staff Reporter writes: The permission for a medical college in Mandya is expected in a day or two. Once the medical college in Mandya is cleared, counselling for these medical seats will be done along with the ongoing process. Otherwise, the seats may be filled during the casual vacancy round. The colleges are likely to be autonomous on the lines of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli, and Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary.
