Team for Asian junior athletics

NEW DELHI: A 33-member team, along with six officials, will leave here for Macau on Wednesday for participation in the Asian junior athletics championships to be held there from July 15 to 18.

Originally, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had chosen a 46-member squad but after confirmatory trials here on July 6 and 7 and July 9, triple jumper Vinod Raj Paul, shot putter Kulwinder Singh, high hurdler K. A. Harish and woman long jumper P. K. Priya were dropped.

Also ruled out for inclusion were the sprint relay teams in both sections since they did not meet the criteria set by the federation.

Chief Coach Suresh Babu was pinning his hopes on shot putter Saurabh Vij, whose 20.35m at Chennai has catapulted him to the No. 1 slot in the world junior lists this season, woman sprinter Mandeep Kaur (200m) and the women's 4 x 400m relay team.

Suresh Babu said on Tuesday that India also had medal chances in the men's 800m (Sajeesh Joseph and Amit Kumar Mishra) and the 4 x 400m relay and the women's heptathlon (Shilpa Sunder) and 1500m (Jhuma Khatun).

Men: Virendra Kumar Pankaj and Binesh V. B. (400m); Sajeesh Joseph and Amit Kumar Mishra (800m); P.Trinath and Ravinder (1500m); Arvind Kumar Yadav and Mohammed Yunus (10,000m); Amalnathan and S. Kannan (long jump); Sourabh Vij (shot put), Samrajeet Singh (javelin), Bhupindra Singh (decathlon); Sunil Kumar, R. Bangaraih, K. Appa Rao and Bibin Mathew (4x400m relay).

Women: Poovamma M. R. and Sini Jose (400m); Jhuma Khatun (800m, 1500m); N. C. Mohanal (1500m); Sangeeta Yadav (5000m); Ruchi Tewari (pole vault); Mayookha Johny (triple jump); Manpreet Kaur and Mukesh Beniwal (shot put), Priyanka Bhanot (discus), Shilpa Chauhan (hammer); Shilpa Sunder (heptathlon); Priyanka Pawar, Ashwani A. C., Anu Mariam Jose and Mandeep Kaur (4x400m relay).
