Kajal passes away

KOLKATA : Footballer Kajal Mukherjee, who rose to prominence in the 1960s as an outstanding midfielder, passed away on Monday night after a prolonged battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife and a son.

Starting his career with Eastern Railway in 1959, Mukherjee soon made it to the Indian team. He was a prominent member of the squad that finished runner-up in the Asia Cup at Tel Aviv and Merdeka Cup in 1964. Playing a key role, he helped the National squad to third positions in the Merdeka Cup in 1965 and '66. He also participated in the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games.

He had a successful club career spanning almost two decades and played for reputed clubs of the city, including East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting. He represented Bengal and Railways in the Santosh Trophy. - Principal Correspondent
