Alert in State following Mumbai blasts

CHENNAI: The police in Tamil Nadu have been put on alert following the serial blasts in railway stations in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

Patrolling has been intensified in the State, particularly at stations going by past incidents where the railways had been targeted. Vital installations would be given protection and vigil increased, a senior police officer said. In Chennai, patrolling has been stepped up. — Special Correspondent

Nominated MLA

takes oath

CHENNAI: Oscar C. Nigli, who was nominated to represent the Anglo-Indian community in the Legislative Assembly, on Tuesday took oath in the Speaker's chamber here. Senior Ministers Arcot N. Veerasamy, M.K. Stalin and K. Ponmudi were present. The Budget session of the Assembly begins on July 22. — Special Correspondent

Minister promises

houses for fire victims

NAGAPATTINAM: Minister for Cooperation Ko.Si. Mani on Tuesday consoled 489 families of fishermen whose temporary tsunami shelters were destroyed in a fire at Thethi village on the outskirts here on Monday. The Minister, accompanied by Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, consoled the affected families who were accommodated on the Valivalam Desikar Polytechnic campus here and assured them that they would be provided permanent houses at the earliest. He told the Collector to provide accommodation to the affected families in the houses that were built in Sellur and Ambedkar Nagar and allot the houses on lottery method. Mr. Mani said NGOs had already been instructed to complete the construction soon and hand over the houses to the tsunami-affected families. — Staff Reporter

Training for teachers

CHENNAI: Candidates selected by the Teachers Recruitment Board during the counselling session held in June, will receive their appointment orders on Friday. Selected teachers will be introduced to school and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan activities in a training programme to be held at the St. Joseph's College Higher Secondary School, E.R. Higher Secondary School and Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School in Tiruchi at 10 a.m. on Friday. A government release said teachers receiving appointment orders were expected to attend the programme without fail. — Staff Reporter
