Election for MPP post put off in 2 places

Correspondent

In the remaining 32 MPPs, Congress bags 20

VIZIANAGARAM : Elections for the post of mandal parishad president (MPP) in Kurupam and Pachipenta have been put off due to irregularities.

In the remaining 32 MPPs, the Congress bagged 20, the TDP 11 and the Independent one.

The election of the Kurupam MPP was postponed as no candidate belonging to the reserved category won the elections from the reserved MPTC.

Though the Congress has a majority, it could not name a nominee as the MPP post is reserved for Backward Classes (general).

Member switches

In Pachipenta, the returning officer postponed the election after hearing of law and order problems as the independent MPTC member from Panukuvalasa, K. Parvathi, the wife of former Congress MPP, K. Koteswara Rao, crossed over to the TDP at the last minute.

The Congress pinned its hopes on the independent for winning the MPP post.

The Congress and the TDP shared six MPTCs each in the mandal.

In Mentada, the Telugu Desam Party won seven MPTCs out of 14, the Congress 6 and a Congress rebel, K. Kalavathi won as an independent from Badevalasa MPTC.

The MPP post is reserved for SC (general) and luck favoured the independent.
