News Analysis
In "A book for our times" (Op-Ed, July 11, 2006), a look at the book "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and 7/7, a reader points out two errors. The sentence was: "There have been two contrasting and almost conflicting responses to the novel, as though two sets have readers have read `two completely different books,' she writes on her website (talkaboutkevin.com)." It should have been "There have been ... as though two sets of readers have read `two completely different books,' ... ." Also, the sentence "When his mother, Eva, asks him in jail why did he did it, he himself sounds puzzled" should have been "When his mother, Eva, asks him in jail why did he do it, ... ." What is "looking down the barrel", asks a reader. The sentence in ""Italy's moment of glory" (Editorial, July 11, 2006) was: "A little over five minutes into the final, Italy appeared to be looking down the barrel after Zinedine Zidane struck a penalty with unimaginable insouciance." It means that a gun is being pointed at a person who is "looking down the barrel of the said weapon". He is in serious trouble. The caption of the PTI photograph accompanying the report "Rs. 3,750-crore relief for Vidarbha" (July 2, 2006, page 1) said "Sympathetic Hearing: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meets farmers in Dharmangao village in Wardha on Saturday." It is incorrect, as a reader says. It should have been "Dhamangaon in Amaravati district". "A well-argued report" (Karnataka, July 7, 2006, page 1) was a report on how the Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy did a "Krishna Menon" in the Legislative Assembly while replying to the debate on the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC). A reader says: "The sentence was: `V.K. Krishna Menon, former Defence Minister, had spoken for nine hours in the United Nations General Assembly over the Kashmir issue in the early 1960s countering the arguments of the eminent Pakistani jurist M. Zafarullah Khan ... .'" This is not correct. In fact, Krishna Menon had spoken for eight hours. Also, the speech was delivered in 1957, and not in the early 1960s." In "Zidane and France seize their final chance" ("Sport", July 7, 2006), a reader says that under the sub-heading "Impending trouble", it was stated that Frank Ribery had room for an effort that Barthez turned over. Instead of Barthez, it should have been Ricardo, the Portuguese goalkeeper. The reader is right. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
