`Wipro committed'
Special Correspondent
Bangalore:
Reacting to statements by Greenpeace, Wipro on Tuesday said that it recognised the seriousness of environmental issues and had taken several steps in this regard.
"We have taken up a drive to educate our customers on upgrading their old equipment and have an upgrade programme in place. Additionally, we have initiated actions to dispose of e-waste through authorised agencies," the company said
Anil K. Jain, vice-president, corporate business unit, said: "Wipro is an active member of MAIT (Manufacturers' Association of Information Technology), which is the association of hardware manufacturers in India and is quite active on issues related to the country. MAIT, along with other hardware manufacturer's associations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government representatives, has formed a nodal agency, EWA. The charter of the agency includes spreading awareness about electronic waste as well as providing training to the unorganised sector on best practices." Mr. Jain said the agency had submitted a draft for legislation in this regard to the Government.
