Plea on power supply to be considered

Head office of Veerashaiva Panchamashali Sangha inaugurated

Bangalore: The State Government is committed to solving the problems faced by members of the Veerashaiva Panchamashali community, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said. He was speaking at the inauguration of the head office of the Karnataka Rajya Veerashaiva Panchamashali Sangha here on Monday.

"The sangha is trying to unite five communities, which is a step in the right direction," he said.

He said the demand of farmers for eight hours of uninterrupted power supply would be looked into. Several schemes for improving power supply were in the offing, he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the coalition Government was committed to serving the people and had introduced schemes for the welfare of people in rural areas.

He said he would look into the demands of the community, which include reservation and appointment of members of the community in the government sector, benefits under II (A) category, formation of a Kittur Rani Chennamma authority, installation of a statue of Chennamma in front of the Vidhana Soudha, issuance of a coin and naming a research chair to commemorate the struggles of Chennamma, and allotment of 10 acres of land in the city to set up an educational institution. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said the Government was aware of the community's economic and social backwardness, and it would take corrective steps soon. He said J.H. Patel, former Chief Minister, had said that Veerashaiva communities should unite and fight for their rights. He promised to discuss the demands put forth by the community with the authorities concerned. Basavaraj Dindur, general secretary of the Sangha, presented a memorandum of demands to the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister.
