BANGALORE: V.S. Malimath, former Chief Justice of the Kerala and Karnataka High Courts and Chairman of the Committee on Reforms in the Criminal Justice System, on Tuesday said the police force should be made autonomous to ensure that they worked more effectively.

Addressing a seminar organised as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka High Court, on the High Court premises, Mr. Malimath said the criminal justice system in the country was outdated. Apart from making the police force autonomous, they should be given better equipment and training in forensic science, he added.

On expeditious justice dispensed by fast-track courts, he said they were looking at quantity, and not quality, of cases.

He said the criminal justice system should safeguard human rights. On cyber crimes, Mr. Malimath said there was a need to impart training to police officials. Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyric Joseph, other judges and advocates were present.
