THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has cleared a distress purchase scheme for buying stocks of coir and coir products with the small producers in the coir industry. The order in this regard has been issued on the basis of the talks that Minister for Coir G. Sudhakaran held with the workers, small producers and representatives of cooperative societies for solving the crisis in the coir sector. The Government proposes to procure and stock Rs.7 crores worth of coir and coir products as part of the scheme. The order contains strict instructions for ensuring transparency in the implementation of the scheme. A State-level advisory committee with the Minister as chairman and Sarada Muralidharan, Secretary, Coir Department, as convener and an implementation committee consisting of heads of the Coir Department and public sector undertakings in the coir sector have been constituted to implement the scheme.
