CALL TO QUENCH THIRST: Residents of Pallapalayam panchayat, near Sulur, blocking the National Highway-67 (Tiruchi Road) in protest against erratic water supply. - Photo: K. Ananthan
Coimbatore : Residents of Pallapalayam panchayat near Sulur blocked the busy National Highway-67 (Tiruchi Road) near Pappampatti pirivu on Tuesday morning in protest against erratic water supply. Nearly 200 women with their children carrying empty pots squatted on the road affecting traffic for nearly two hours. Efforts by the police to persuade the residents to give up the agitation went in vain, as the residents insisted on an assurance from the revenue and TWAD Board officials on regular water supply. The residents said they were getting water only once in 15 days without any intimation, catching them unawares. There were frayed tempers when the policemen tried to remove the agitators to the roadside. Anticipating trouble, additional reinforcements were rushed from Palladam and Coimbatore to handle the situation. After the revenue officials promised to ensure regular water supply, the residents lifted the blockade.
