Congress abstains from voting

Fresh date sought for election of Medak Zilla Parishad Vice-Chairman

  • Congress members sore over post being given to TRS
  • TRS resents Congress members' stance

Sangareddy: With the Congress abstaining from the election of the Zilla Parishad vice-chairman for the second consecutive day, Medak district Collector B. Venkatesam referred the issue to the State Election Commission seeking a fresh date for the election.

Only one Congress ZPTC member, Patlolla Nagamani from Sadasivapet, attended the special meeting convened on Tuesday at the Zilla Parishad conference hall here, while five Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) members, including Ashi Reddy, aspirant for the vice-chairman's post, waited patiently. Half-an-hour's time provided by the Collector lapsed without the Congress members turning up.

Speaking to reporters, a distraught Mr. Ashi Reddy said that they felt cheated by the action of the Congress. He said that the people of Telangana had been watching how the Congress benefited by the TRS in Khammam but denied the same benefit in Medak.

    `Still needs TRS support'

He said that the Congress should remember that it still required the TRS support in Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Warangal.

Congress legislators who opposed allocation of the vice-chairman post to the TRS succeeded in getting the election postponed so that they could air their objections to the high command.

Medak MLA Shasidhar Reddy was vociferous in expressing his displeasure over the decision.

Narsapur MLA Sunitha Lakshma Reddy, Sangaredy MLA T. Jayaprakash Reddy and district party in-charge Jaganmohan Rao held discussions with the elected Congress ZPTC members on Monday before taking the decision to abstain from the voting.
