Congress-TRS pact under strain again

Trouble over seat-sharing in some ZPs

  • Both parties denounce each other for the stalemate
  • TRS announces that there will be no further talks with Congress
  • APCC chief warns of rethinking on giving Nizamabad post to TRS

HYDERABAD: The simmering differences between the Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samiti over seat sharing in Karimnagar, Warangal and Nizamabad Zilla Parishads boiled over on Tuesday with the leaderships of the two parties denouncing each other.

The TRS leadership announced that there would be no further negotiations with Congress and it would take its own course in the elections. Senior TRS leader A. Narendra said the talks with Congress leaders had hit a roadblock and it was left for them to decide whether it wanted TRS support in Karimnagar and Warangal. Amid these strains, APCC president K. Keshava Rao warned that the party would have to rethink its decision to give the Nizamabad ZP Chairman post to TRS. Differences between the two parties reached a flash point following the absence of the TRS members during the Nizamabad ZP meeting.

A fresh problem arose due to postponement of the election of Vice-Chairman to Medak ZP. While Mr. Narendra accused the Congress of reneging on its promise to give the post to his party, Dr. Keshva Rao said the Congress did not field its nominee.

    Kesava Rao blamed

At a press conference, Mr. Narendra blamed the PCC president's behaviour for the impasse. The PCC president, on his part, asserted that the party's flexibility towards its allies was reflected from the fact that the party had decided to give more posts to the TRS than the latter's expectations. Dr. Keshava Rao accused the TRS leaders of "telling total lies" and the situation "stands at a juncture where it began." The threat handed over by the TRS notwithstanding, he exuded confidence that the matter would be sorted out. One of the reasons for his confidence was that the TRS would not take any decision that would ensure the TDP's victory.
