Congress, allies win majority of mandal parishad president posts

HYDERABAD: Stray incidents, including the death of a 55-year-old man while trying to flee the scene of a Congress-TDP clash in Mahabubnagar district, marred the election of Mandal Parishad Presidents on Tuesday even as Congress and allies put up an impressive performance winning 637 mandal parishads. In several districts dissension among rival groups in parties led to postponement of elections due to lack of quorum.

According to a State Election Commission report, of the 1,017 MPPs, the Congress won 603 followed by TDP 337, CPI (M) and CPI 14 each, TRS 20, BSP 2, independents 26 and BJP 1. Elections to 79 MPPs were not held. Till last reports were received, Congress nominees fared well in Chittoor, East Godavari, Guntur, Kadapa, Krishna, Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nellore, Nizamabad, Prakasam, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Warangal districts. TDP bagged a majority of MPPs in Adilabad, Anantapur, Ranga Reddy, West Godavari and Khammam.

In Adilabad, Tanur sub-inspector opened two rounds of fire in the air to quell stone-throwing TDP and TRS workers.

TDP continued its winning streak in Adilabad bagging 28 of the 52 posts while Congress won 20, TRS two and CPI one. The Congress also continued to reign supreme in Karimnagar by winning 29 of 57 MPPs. In Warangal, the Congress won 20 mandals followed by TDP 16.

Postponed

Elections to only 41 could be held while the rest were postponed. In Nizamabad, the Congress secured 21 MPPs followed by TDP 10. In Rayalaseema region, overcoming shocking defeat in Anantapur ZP, TDP bagged 26 MPPs followed by Congress 24. Elections to 11 MPPs were put off. The Congress swept the polls in Chittoor bagging 42, leaving only 16 to TDP.

In Kurnool, elections to 51 MPPs were held of which 28 went in favour of the Congress, TDP (20), independents (two) and CPI (one). Election to Devanakonda MP was put off. In four mandals where the Congress and TDP secured equal majority, the winners were decided through lottery.
