`World is turning young'

NEW DELHI: Noting that the theme for this year's World Population Day, "Young People", focuses on the unique challenges faced by the burgeoning ranks of the young in our societies, Heart Care Foundation of India president K.K. Aggarwal on Tuesday said nearly half the world's population is under 25, representing the largest chunk of young people in human history.

"Over 500 million people aged between 15 and 24 years live on less than two dollars per day; 96 million young women in developing countries do not know how to read or write and 14 million adolescent girls aged between 15 and 19 become mothers every year. Every day, 6,000 young people get infected with HIV," added Dr. Aggarwal.

BJP leader continues padyatra

NEW DELHI: On the fifth day of his fortnight-long "padyatra" in protest against rising prices and the power and water crisis in the Capital, BJP national secretary Vijay Goel said though the Congress Government had promised uninterrupted power supply to the citizens within three years, the city was witnessing power cuts ranging from eight to 10 hours every day.

"The power crisis is so acute that children are neither able to study nor sleep," added Mr. Goel, asking the people to introspect whether the Congress had solved their problems in the past eight years.

Computer course

for CISF wards

NEW DELHI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) with the help of Amity University has started a nine-month computer application course for the welfare of the wards of its personnel.

The course covers various aspects of computer application including MS office, excel, power point, page maker and Internet.

The first batch of students of the computer application course passed out on May 26. The valediction ceremony was held at the CGO Complex here on Monday.

Rich tributes paid

NEW DELHI: Rich tributes were paid at a function organised here on Monday to the heroic people who sacrificed their lives in the Poltava battle. The function was organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) and the Indo-Russian Youth Club.

RCSC Deputy Director Sergey V. Cherkas underlined the significance of the battle of Poltava, one of the famous events in Russian as well as world history, which took place in the Ukraine on June 27, 1709, as "an outstanding example of courage and valour of the people fighting for their independence".
