ANANTAPUR: The district units of the Telugu Desam Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led a protest demonstration against the alleged undemocratic methods used by the Congress in winning the Zilla Parishad chairperson's post. An effigy of the `traitors of democracy' was carried by CPI (M) activists from their party office to the Tower Clock centre and TDP activists came in a procession from their party office to the same point to perform the `last rites.' Leaders of the two parties performed the `last rites' of the effigy before confining it to flames.
Undemocratic methods
Speaking at the protest, TDP leaders K. Srinivasulu and P. Keshav alleged that the ruling Congress had followed undemocratic methods to win the Zilla Parishad chief's post, although the party lacked the people's mandate. Alleging that J.C. Diwakar Reddy and N. Raghuveera Reddy were `traitors of democracy' the TDP leaders said the two had orchestrated the undemocratic tactics of the Congress to wean away two TDP ZPTCs by offering them huge sums as bait. Horse-trading
CPI (M) leaders G. Obulakonda Reddy and V. Rambhupal said what the Congress did to wrest the Zilla Parishad chief's post was nothing but horse-trading and hoped that the people would teach a lesson to the ruling party for subverting the people's verdict. Meanwhile, the district TDP has called for a district bandh on Wednesday in protest against the `murder of democracy by Congress' in winning the Zilla Parishad posts in spite of lacking a majority.
