Row erupts after draw of lots to decide the MPP Row erupts after draw of lots to decide the MPP election

  • Both TRS and TDP claim five MPTC members each
  • TDP candidate declared winner after draw of lots

ADILABAD: Police fired two rounds into the air at Tanur mandal headquarters in Adilabad district after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) activists resorted to stone pelting after the election to Mandal Parishad President (MPP) post was held on Tuesday.

TRS activists resented the party losing the post despite having a majority of five Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) members in a house of 10.

    Congress support

The TDP, which has four MPTC members, reached parity with the support of the lone Congress member. This necessitated a decision by draw of lots in which the TDP candidate won.

As the TDP workers were celebrating the victory, TRS activists clashed with them and the policemen on bandobast duty were reportedly hurt in the stone-pelting. "Narayana, Tanur SI, fired two rounds with his service revolver to disperse the restive crowd," said Adilabad Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela.

    Postponed

Election to Kerameri MPP has been postponed because of disagreement over the candidature within the TDP. The TDP has a majority of six MPTC members and there are two claimants for the post of MPP.

TDP MPP candidates won in a majority of 28 mandals out of the 52 in the district while the Congress candidates won from 20, the TRS from two and CPI from one.

In the five mandals in Mudhole Assembly constituency, the TDP won in three mandals, the TRS in two and the Congress in one.

In Nirmal constituency's five mandals the Congress won in three and TDP in two. In Khanapur, the TDP won in four mandals while the Congress won in one mandal.

Election was postponed in Kerameri mandal.

In Luxettipet constituency's five mandals Congress won in three and TDP in two, in Chennur constituency's six mandals Congress won in four and TDP and CPI bagged one each. The TDP made a clean sweep in Boath constituency's seven mandals.

In Sirpur constituency's five mandals the TDP won from three and Congress from two, in Asifabad constituency's seven mandals TDP won from four and Congress from three and in Adilabad constituency's five mandals three went the Congress way and two were won by the TDP.
