MANGALORE: The bio-park, an important part of the Pilikula Nisarga Dhama at Moodushedde near Mangalore has been named Dr. K. Shivarama Karanath Biological Park Pilikula. Managed by Pilikula Nisarga Dhama Society, the park was raised under the guidance of Bharatlal Meena, Chairman of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd., who worked as Deputy Commissioner in the district. The park had been upgraded into a regional science centre under the national science mission of the Centre. The upgradation programme, taken up in 1999, was completed recently under the guidance of scientist U.R. Rao. The Regional Science Centre will cover Udupi, Shimoga, Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Uttara Kannada districts. Society's Executive Director J.R. Lobo told The Hindu that the science centre was developed at a cost of Rs. 7 crore and there were proposals that the science centre could be named after U.S. Mallya. According to the wildlife warden, Jayaprakash Bhandary, efforts are on to bring Asiatic Lions from Gir forest reserve in Gujarat.
