Association in Neelangarai decides on image makover

CHENNAI: Are the city's share auto drivers preparing to get rid of their image as rule violators?

Taking the lead in this direction, members of the Sengodi auto, taxi and van driver's association in Neelankarai, have decided not to carry more than the number of passengers permitted in their share autos. The decision was taken at the association's meeting last week. K. Rajendran, president of the association, said following raids by police, the RTO and the MTC authorities last week, many share autorickshaws, which were found to have violated permit rules, were seized by the authorities.

More than 100 vehicles were rounded up in various parts of the city and action was initiated by the authorities against the violators. Apparently, the raids have resulted in a rethink by the association members. According to Mr. Rajendran, it was also decided not to support anyone who violated rules, even if they were members of the association. The association would also initiate action against its members. The association has also decided not to attach extra wooden planks in their vehicles to create extra space for carrying passengers.
