CHENNAI: Police have arrested three men from Andhra Pradesh and seized a consignment of crackers, illegally brought into the city. M. Ravi, Joint Commissioner of Police (North), said the country-made crackers, packed in 86 gunny bags, were booked as a consignment at a private parcel service in Guntur. It was addressed to the company's office here. On Monday, when the material was being unloaded in the parcel company's godown on Govindappa Naicken Street in George Town around 10.45 p.m., there was an explosion. The police, who were informed about it, seized the vehicle and moved it to Island Grounds, as the godown is located in a residential locality. Mr. Ravi said the crackers were loaded along with vegetables and pulses in the lorry, bearing registration number AP 04U 1211. Koteeswara Rao of Guntur booked the parcels in his name. Preliminary investigation showed the crackers were illegally transported without obtaining the necessary licence. The consignment passed through the check posts along the Chennai-Guntur stretch, a senior police officer said. Kotwal Chavadi police on Monday arrested Ravi (58), the lorry driver from Guntur, Ramu (18), the cleaner, and Raja (32), godown in-chargeat Nellore. Cases have been filed against them under the Explosives Act and the IPC. A police team will visit Guntur to trace the person who sent the consignment, Mr. Ravi said.
