CHENNAI: Unexpected showers on Tuesday evening gave Chennai a respite from the oppressive heat of the past few days. The downpour, although brief, was welcome, as maximum temperatures had soared up to 39 and 40 degree Celsius this week. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Nungambakkam received 6.8 mm of rain, and Meenambakkam 13.4 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday. On Monday, the Red Hills reservoir received 6 mm of rainfall. On Tuesday, dry Westerly winds met the moist Easterlies to produce rain. However, the resulting showers would last only for a short time, an official said. The forecast for Wednesday is cloudy skies with the possibility of a shower or thundershower in the evening or night. The rest of the week is expected to be cooler than last week. The last few days have almost been like a second summer, as temperatures rose three or four degrees above the normal temperature of 35 degree Celsius. In meteorological parlance, `normal' refers to the average of the maximum temperatures recorded for the period in the last 30 years.
