Central law to regulate labour travel to Gulf sought
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
State BJP has represented to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to prevail upon Centre to bring in a law to streamline travel of workers from Andhra Pradesh to the Gulf for employment.
Party leaders led by N. Indrasena Reddy, state unit president, in a memorandum referred to reports on arrest of 5,000 Telugu labourers in Oman for incomplete travel documents.
The leaders said at least 10 workers had died in custody, while others fell in the hands of Oman Government.
They said many unemployed youth from the State, mostly from Telangana were employed in the Gulf, having gone there through unorganised, illegal agencies. Hence, the need for a Central law to streamline such travel.
In another memorandum, they sought release of arrears of tuition fee of students pursuing professional education, to enable them to continue their study. They said Rs. 240 crores was due in the last three years to about 3.7 lakh students.
Early release of dues was necessary as colleges were refusing to allow students to write examinations and attend classes in courses like MBA and MCA.
