Police acted on tip-off, laid a trap

  • Suspect allegedly said he carried hawala money for Pakistan-based Kashmiri Mukhtyar Ahmed
  • He collected money and supplied it to militants operating in the Kashmir valley
  • Hunt on for militant to whom the RDX was to be delivered

NEW DELHI: A 43-year-old man allegedly working as a conduit for the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was arrested on Bhisham Pitamah Marg in South Delhi by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on Monday. The police claim to have recovered over 2 kg of RDX and Rs. 49 lakh in cash from him.

Joint Commissioner of Police Karnal Singh said the Special Cell recently received a tip-off that a native of Baramulla in Kashmir, staying at Jangpura in South Delhi, had links with a terrorist outfit. Subsequently, the suspect's activities were closely watched. The police learnt that he was to hand over a consignment of explosives and hawala money to a militant near the NBCC tower on Bhisham Pitamah Marg on Monday.

A trap was laid and the accused was arrested around 11.15 a.m. after he reached there in a car. He was identified as Ajaz Hussain Khwaja. The police recovered the RDX consignment that was concealed in a built-in cavity inside the vehicle.

During interrogation, Ajaz allegedly disclosed that he worked as a carrier of hawala money for Pakistan-based Kashmiri Mukhtyar Ahmed. Ajaz claimed that he met Mukhtyar at Old Rajender Nagar, and the latter offered him good money for working as a carrier for the terrorist outfit. He said he used to get instructions from Mukhyar mostly through the Internet.
