HYDERABAD: The Government, after an enquiry, has clarified that the Urdu Fazil certificate issued by the Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu, Panjagutta, is considered equivalent to the Intermediate Education for the period from 1999-2000 to 2004-2005 only and has instructed the Director of School Education to take necessary action.

The Government's examination on the certificate follows a report in these columns saying that the Education Department had bungled by putting hundreds of candidates appearing for the ensuing DSC 2006 into a quandary by refusing to accept the Urdu Fazil course as equivalent to Intermediate. With the last date for submission of DSC applications ending on July 14, a large number of Minority students were uncertain about their future as their applications were being turned down by the District Educational Officers. The Idara-e-Adabiyat,which receives budgetary support from the Government, had been conducting proficiency courses in Urdu at various levels since 1948.

The Idara had also approached the court seeking permanent equivalency to the Fazil course on a par with Intermediate.
