Thiruvananthapuram: The City Corporation Council which met here on Tuesday urged the State and Central Governments to sanction Rs.36 lakhs from the calamity relief fund for the restoration of the coastal areas ravaged by monsoon. Moving a resolution on the issue, Poundukadavu ward councillor Veli Varghese said 25 houses in Valiaveli were destroyed and over 100 damaged in the tidal action and strong winds on July 3 and 4. Mr. Varghese said the Corporation had suffered heavy financial loss due to the natural disaster. "The concrete road leading to the Veli sandbar was washed away by the raging sea and the tarred road in front of the Veli church heavily damaged. The overflowing Thettiyar canal destroyed the culvert at Pulimuttam and the Kuzhivila- Karimanal road was destroyed," he said. Mr. Varghese appealed to the Government to release Rs.36 lakhs for reconstruction of the damaged structures. The resolution was adopted unanimously. The meeting adopted another resolution moved by Chalai Mohanan urging the Government to sanction higher secondary courses at Central High School and Killipalam Girls High School. It also decided to intensify the activities under the Integrated Rabies Control Programme. The council appealed to the Government to relocate the signal boards marring the statue of Vayalar Rama Varma on the traffic island in front of the Keltron building, Vellayambalam. Vazhuthacaud councillor Rakhi Ravikumar said the signal lights were a disgrace to the great cultural personality. Replying to another motion, Mayor C. Jayan Babu promised urgent steps to clear the backlog of applications for various pension and welfare schemes. The meeting mourned the death of writer Thirunelloor Karunakaran and rationalist Joseph Idamaruku.
