Capital power situation improves considerably

Showers cool down Delhi, peak load-shedding drops to 253 MW

NEW DELHI: Thanks to monsoon showers and a drop in temperature, the power situation in the Capital has improved considerably. Though many parts of the city reported power cuts on Tuesday, Power Department sources said they were due to local faults and not load-shedding.

On Monday the peak load-shedding had dropped to 253 MW at 10-30 a.m. while the maximum demand was 3,435 MW and the situation was expected to improve further on Tuesday as the peak demand fell to around 3,341 MW.

In fact, on Tuesday evening the power supply situation was so comfortable that Delhi -- which had been overdrawing from the grid during the past week -- was under-drawing power to the tune of nearly 200 MW. And due to adequate availability of power in the system the frequency was also at the almost ideal level of 50 hertz.

The only cause for concern were the planned and forced outages as the functioning of the power plants makes a big difference to the power supply situation when the demand goes up. Since in the rainy season the demand jumps up due to the humidity factor as soon as it becomes sunny, officials said there is a need to remain in a state of preparedness.

On Tuesday, the planned outages were at a very high level of 439 MW and these included a 210 MW unit of the Badarpur Thermal Power Station down due to leakage of hydrogen coolant, a 42 MW unit of the Indraprastha plant closed due to planned shutdown, and a 67.5 MW unit of Rihand Power House and a 44 MW unit of Singrauli which are closed due to overhauling.

Besides, the forced outages amounted to 164 MW and this included a 60 MW unit of Indraprastha due to an increase in the level of oil in the main tank, and a 57 MW unit of Nathpa Jhakri due to high labyrinth leakage.
