Going an extra mile to raise funds for a cause

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: It is an annual event in Britain where the public comes together to generate money for a noble cause. And now "Sport Relief", which gives students an opportunity to connect with the world, discharge their duties as global citizens and, most importantly, have some fun in the process, will be held here in the Capital on Thursday. Even as Delhi is warming up for the British Council's "Sport Relief Mile" challenge, Nigeria will also host the sporting event in which young participants will dribble a ball for a mile. And in Cameroon too a number of enthusiastic kids will take part in it.

Organised for the first time in India and Africa to tackle poverty, the "Sport Relief'' challenge will encourage participants to go an extra mile to raise funds for the underprivileged and marginalised children. Involving a test of skill, speed and teamwork, the games include mile-a-thon, three-legged race, tunnel relay, sock-up and "what's for breakfast?" The event will also be a learning experience for the young participants who will have to display their organisational, creative and management skills in making "Sport Relief Mile" a success.

Students from Mother's International School, Bal Bharati Public School, Motilal Nehru School of Sports and Ramjas School -- who received training as part of the Dreams and Teams programme being run by the British Council India in collaboration with Youth Sport Trust, UK. -- will take part in the event. Sport Relief is a registered charity in the United Kingdom that regularly organises fund-raising events to support humanitarian activities in the poor countries of the world.
