PAYING HOMAGE: The newly elected women members of Oulgaret Municipality observing silence as a mark of respect to the Mumbai blast victims on Wednesday.
PONDICHERRY: Chairman of the first municipal council of Oulgaret N.S.J. Jayabal alias Ayyanar and 37 councillors were sworn in on Wednesday. Pondicherry Collector G. Theva Needhi Dhas administered the oath of office at a function held on the police playground in Gorimedu, near here. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Local Administration Minister Malladi Krishna Rao, Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shah Jahan, PMK Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss, chairperson of the Pondicherry Municipal Council Dr. B. Sridevi, CPI MLA R. Viswanatahan, Pondicherry Congress general secretary A. Gandhiraj attended. Also present were Secretary to Pondicherry Government A.K. Chaturvedi, Director of Local Administration E. Vallavan and a host of other officials. Mr. Rangasamy greeted the chairman and councillors by offering them a shawl. With the formation of the Oulgaret Municipal Council, all regions have a fully constituted elected bodies. The party-wise strength in the 38-member Oulgaret Municipal Council is: Congress (16 - Chairman plus 15 members); DMK (6), CPI (4), AIADMK and PMK (one each), PMC (2), and Independents (8). The presidents of the 98 village panchayats were direct elected recently.
