Bidar: The Dalit Sangharsh Samiti and other front organisations launched an indefinite strike in Bidar on Tuesday demanding introduction of English as one of the subjects from the first standard in government schools. The protesters took out a procession in the town raising slogans such as "English kalisi, jeeva ulisi" (teach English, save our lives). They sat in a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. They also submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. DSS groups from various villages would take turns to observe a relay fast till the State Government took a decision, they said. The activists said they were not opposed to education in Kannada medium. They said they wanted their children to be taught the English language from the first standard.
