CREATING AWARENESS: Members of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane explaining to commuters the rights of women to occupy seats reserved for them, in Gulbarga on Wednesday.
GULBARGA: Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane and Pragnya Kanoonu Salaha Samiti along with the North Eastern Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) on Wednesday launched a campaign to create awareness among people on the rights of women to occupy seats reserved for them in buses. President of the sanghatane K Neela, samiti president Meenakshi Bali, senior officials of the NEKRTC and women volunteers distributed pamphlets to bus passengers. They said the driver and conductor should ensure that all the seats reserved for women were occupied by women.
Rules
Ms. Neela said the rules reserving seats in buses for women and people with disabilities were not followed, and in most of the buses the seats reserved for them were occupied by men. Conductors and drivers of the buses failed to ensure that the seats reserved for women were occupied by women only, she said. She said that the women volunteers of both the organisations in association with NEKRTC officials would continue the campaign and spread out to other areas in the region to ensure that the rights of women were protected. In some buses, some men occupying seats reserved for women were seen vacating their seats and allowing women to occupy them during the campaign.
