Guest lecturers in colleges not paid salaries

Special Correspondent

Stir for regularisation of services to be launched

  • The Government has fixed a monthly salary of Rs. 2,000 for guest lecturers
  • Finance Department says it cannot release the salaries as it had not been informed about the appointments
  • 273 guest lecturers were appointed in Gulbarga division in 2005
  • Rally to be held in Gulbarga on July 15

GULBARGA: Guest lecturers who were appointed last year to fill vacant posts in government degree colleges in the State have been not paid their salaries even after their services have been discontinued.

The Government had fixed a monthly salary of Rs. 2,000 for these lecturers, which worked out to be less than the minimum wages prescribed for unskilled labourers. They are now struggling to get their salary dues from the government.

Honorary president of the Gulbarga Division Government Degree College Guest Lecturers Federation P.S. Maligi and All India Democratic Youth Organisation State vice-president B. Bhagwan Reddy said while the Education Department said that it was yet to get the amount due for payment of salaries to guest lecturers from the Government, the Finance Department said it had not been informed about their appointment and could not release funds for salaries.

Mr. Maligi said there were more than 3,295 posts of lecturers vacant in the government degree colleges. In Gulbarga Division alone, more than 450 posts were vacant. They said to overcome the shortage of the permanent staff due to the ban on the recruitment imposed by the Government, the authorities decided to appoint the guest lecturers to fill up vacant posts. In 2005, a circular was issued to recruit 273 guest lecturers in Gulbarga division. Of this, 185 posts were filled up and they started working in different colleges from October 2005 and were relieved on March 31 without being paid salaries.

Mr. Maligi and Mr. Reddy said while the guest lecturers in pre-university colleges were paid Rs. 150 a class, and on an average were paid Rs. 4,500 a month regularly, the guest lecturers in the degree colleges were paid a fixed amount of Rs. 2,000.

They said the federation and the AIDYO would launch an agitation demanding regularisation of their services, payment of higher salaries, and continuing them in the service for this academic year also.

A rally would be held in Gulbarga on July 15, and on the following day a divisional-level convention would be held. Similar agitation would be held elsewhere in consultation with the guest lecturers working in other parts of the State.
