CHENNAI: India's R.R. Laxman scored full nine points to win the Central Province Chess Festival's international Open in Kandy on Tuesday. This is the first overseas triumph for Laxman. The International Master from Chennai won the 153-player event, which had a total prize money of Rs.1.30 lakhs. Seven Indian players took part in the event. Sri Lanka's Ramesh Veerawardhane finished second with eight points, while six players, including R.V. Shandilya of India, finished third with seven points.
Mixed luck for Srinath
Meanwhile in Dubai, the World under-12 champion, N. Srinath narrowly missed the overall title and finished second in the Dubai junior chess championship. The Chennai lad, however, retained the under-12 title. Top seed IM Eltaj Safarli of Azerbaijan won the tournament with eight points from nine rounds. Srinath scored 7.5 points, winning seven and losing one and drawing one game. The 146-player event included 22 Indians. Three Indians, Udeshi Aditya, Fenil Shah, Dhruv Hingorani tied for the eighth to seventeenth places with 6.5 points.
