Madikeri: Seven persons died in rain-related incidents in Kodagu this year, and compensation of Rs. 3.50 lakh has been paid to their families, according to Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav, here. Of the seven persons, six died in a landslip on Madikeri-Mekeri Road a few days ago, while a man fell into the river at Bhagamandala in June. An amount of Rs. 3,000 was given as compensation for a case of cattle death, an official release said here on Wednesday. As many as 158 houses were damaged in the rain, for which Rs. 2.89 lakh was distributed as relief. In Madikeri taluk, 44 houses were damaged (Rs. 65,000), 28 in Somwarpet taluk (Rs. 60,000) and 86 in Virajpet taluk (Rs.1.64 lakh). The total loss incurred by Kodagu district in the rain, including loss to property, from January till July 10, has been put at Rs. 21.88 crore. A sum of Rs. 7.81 lakh was given away as relief so far, Mr. Yadav told Srikant, Regional Commissioner, Mysore Division, who was presiding over a meeting concerning rain-related incidents and disbursement of relief. A sum of Rs. 20 lakh each was released to the three taluks in Kodagu to tackle rain-related incidents. Tahsildars of the three taluks had been instructed to accord priority to rain relief works, Mr. Yadav said. Besides, Rs. 1.39 lakh was sanctioned for losses in the agricultural and horticultural sectors. Paddy crop in 144.26 hectares were damaged in the district against which Rs. 49,000 would be given. Horticulture crops were damaged in 61.32 hectares for which Rs. 90,000 would be given, Mr. Yadav stated.
65 rehabilitated
As many as 65 persons were rehabilitated by the Kodagu district administration in Somwarpet and Virajpet taluks, apart from those identified in Madikeri city, Mr. Yadav said. Owing to floods, 21 persons belonging to five families were shifted to safer places at Poojekallu Anepare in Virajpet taluk and 44 persons from Nellihudikeri village in Somwarpet taluk. They were shifted to rehabilitation centres opened in Government primary schools, Mr. Yadav said. Similarly, 29 persons from nine families in Mangaladevinagar area of the city were moved to the community hall in Indiranagar and some to rented premises, Mr. Yadav said. The district administration had provided Rs. 6,000 (a sum of Rs. 1000 each) to the families of six persons who were buried alive in the recent landslip here, for meeting funeral expenses, he said.
