Staff Correspondent

Residents fear that it may cause an epidemic in the area

  • Six lorries transporting garbage from Kozhikode in Kerala to Kutta were seized 12 days ago
  • But the vehicles are still parked in front of Kutta police station

Madikeri: Residents of Kutta in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu, including the president of the Kutta Gram Panchayat, have appealed to the district administration to remove garbage from six lorries, which were seized 12 days ago.

The lorries, which did not have inter-State permits, were transporting garbage from Kozhikode in Kerala to Kutta for converting it into organic manure.

Gram panchayat president Ramakrishna, secretary of Nirmala Kodagu Palecanda Aiyanna and Kutta residents told presspersons here on Wednesday that stench emanated from the garbage. They said that it might cause an epidemic in the area.

    Complaint

Gram panchayat members and residents of Kutta lodged a complaint alleging that the garbage contained toxic waste from hospitals, and cases were booked against six persons. But the lorries carrying garbage were still parked in front of Kutta police station, he said.

Ganapathi and Cariappa, residents, said that students of a nearby school were finding it difficult to put up with the stench and houseflies had multiplied in the area.

Mr. Aiyanna and Mr. Ramakrishna said they would appeal to Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav and Superintendent of Police Ramachandra Rao to initiate measures to dispose of the garbage. The district administration should institute a probe to ascertain how and why the garbage was transported from Kerala to Kodagu, they said.

Ravi Chengappa of "Cauvery Sene" said that the organisation would observe a bandh in Kutta on Friday if the garbage was not removed by then.
