News Analysis
In "Congress hails court decision" (July 12, 2006) a reader points out an error. The sentence "In a statement, Mr. Modhvadia Chief Minister Narendra Modi of being behind the conspiracy to flare up communal passion for narrow political ends" should have been "In a statement, Mr. Modhvadia [leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly] accused [Gujarat] Chief Minister Narendra Modi of being behind the conspiracy to incite communal passion for narrow political ends." The sentence in "Hearing deferred" (July 12, 2006) was: "A hearing before all four Central Information Commissioners to decide on the appeal was scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed to June 21 following a request from the DoPT." (The report pertained to the correspondence between former President K.R. Narayanan and former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots.) A reader says that it should have been July 21. The reader is right. The error was corrected in later editions. A reader points out that in "Non-political experts to head J & K working groups" (July 4, 2006), T.K.N. Nair was incorrectly mentioned as the Cabinet Secretary. Mr. T.K.A. Nair is the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. The Union Cabinet Secretary is Mr. B.K. Chaturvedi. A reader says with reference to "Chinkara poaching case against Salman reopened" (June 23, 2006), "The report specifies the chinkara to be a species of the deer. But the deer is a ruminant mammal belonging to the family Cervidae. The chinkara, a species of gazelle, belongs to the family `Bovidae'." P.L. Ananthasamy, I.F.S., Chief Conservator of Forests & Director, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, Chennai, clarifies: "The gazelle (chinkara) forms a sub-division of the family Bovidae. The deer belongs to the family Cervidae. The gazelle has permanent, ringed straight pointed horns, while deer species have branched antlers which are shed and regrown every year. The gazelle also usually has a white streak down each side of the face and a dusky patch above the nose." The Public Relations Department, San Diego Zoo, adds that common names such as deer and gazelle have no scientific basis and are often applied to different kinds of animals. This is one of the reasons why scientific (Latin) names were created for species to clarify what type of animal is being referred to.
