Water to be released from Hemavathy reservoir

Staff Correspondent

This will help farmers in Hassan, Tumkur and Mandya districts

HASSAN: To facilitate farmers in the command areas of Hassan, Tumkur and Mandya districts to take up agricultural operations, water will be released into canals from Hemavathy reservoir on July 16. A decision in this regard would be formally taken at a meeting of the Irrigation Consultative Committee (ICC), scheduled in Bangalore on Wednesday evening, Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna said.

Addressing presspersons after a meeting of officials here, he said the Government had released Rs. 2.74 crore towards seed subsidy for the district; this included Rs. 50 lakh, which was released earlier.

Joint Director of Agriculture H.P. Mahesh Gowda had been instructed to take steps on extending assistance to farmers, including supply of seeds and fertilizers, the Minister said.

When his attention was drawn to the protest by farmers in various parts of the district over the non-supply of subsidised seeds, Mr. Revanna clarified that the total requirement of the district was 17,000 quintals and it was decided to extend seed subsidy only to medium and small farmers. It had become difficult to supply these seeds to all who thronged the distribution centres, as the Agriculture Department had supplied only 8,269 quintals, he said.

Of the total requirement of 123 lakh tonnes of fertilizers, the district had received 93,000 tonnes till date and a request had been sent to the Department of Agriculture for the rest, he said.

Referring to complaints of supply of inferior quality fertilizers at a higher rate, he said that Mr. Mahesh Gowda had formed three teams to look into the matter.
