MALAPPURAM: The district has suffered a loss of Rs.27.8 crores in the monsoon havoc, said District Collector T.T. Antony. He was speaking at a review meeting held here on Wednesday ahead of the arrival of a Central team to assess the damage caused by monsoon. As many as 10 people lost their lives and 21 others were injured in monsoon-related incidents. Fifty-five houses were destroyed and 1,387 houses partly damaged. Many roads in the district were damaged, incurring an estimated loss of Rs.14.51 crores. As much as 40 km of the State highway, 120 km of district roads and 31 km of panchayat roads were damaged. Agricultural crops valued at Rs.679 lakhs were damaged. The KSEB suffered a loss of Rs.42.42 lakhs and the KWA Rs.128 lakhs. The Irrigation sector suffered a loss of Rs.336 lakhs and Government buildings Rs.21.5 lakhs. The loss of fisheries sector was put at Rs.37.59 lakhs. Additional District Magistrate K.J. Joseph, Tirur Revenue Divisional Officer V.K. Sivadasan and Perinthalmanna Revenue Divisional Officer Mohammed Sageer took part in the meeting.
