Residents block movement of sand lorries

Staff Reporter

They want police to identify an alternative route for heavy vehicles

  • Raise slogans against the police for not identifying an alternative route for movement of these vehicles
  • Point out that a schoolgirl was fatally knocked down by a lorry a few months ago and student was injured when a sand-laden lorry knocked him down

KANCHEEPURAM: Sand-laden lorries passing through Vilakadikoil Street and Aaladipillayar Koil Street here were blocked by a group of irate residents here on Wednesday.

The demonstrators blocked a dozen lorries passing through Vilakadikoil Street near Rengaswamykulam at around 4 p.m. and raised slogans against the police for not identifying an alternative route for movement of these vehicles. When the residents of Vilakadikoil Street and adjoining by-lanes staged a demonstration last week, the police assured them that an alternative route would be identified `within a few days.' However, sand-laden lorries continued to pass through Vilakadikoil Street. Irked by the movement of these vehicles, the residents once again on Wednesday blocked the vehicles.

Meanwhile, a section of demonstrators went to the nearby Aaladipillayar Koil Street and mobilised support for their demonstration as the sand-laden lorries from Sevilimedu used to reach Vilakadikoil Street via A.K. Street.

Hundreds of residents from A.K. Street converged at the junction of A.K. Street and V.K. Street and squatted on the road.

They raised slogans against the movement of sand-laden lorries through their street by pointing out that a schoolgirl was fatally knocked down by a lorry a few months ago and a student sustained grievous injuries when a sand-laden lorry hit him from behind last week.

They had also condemned the police and district administration for not trying to evolve an effective and comprehensive plan to ensure smooth passage of sand-laden lorries through the town without causing inconvenience to the public.

Movement of lorries and other vehicles through A.K. Street and V.K. Street resumed at around 6-30 p.m. after the demonstrators were pacified by senior revenue and police officials that their grievances would be redressed soon.
