CHENNAI: Fifty children of Sivananda Orphanage at Mangalapuri in Kattankulathur interacted with Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

The Governor answered various questions from the children regarding his career and what inspired him. On a question about solving crises, the Governor said that the tsunami was the only disaster that struck the State and the need of relief materials was met with support of people from across the country. "... India is like that. When a natural calamity strikes, the entire nation comes to help you," he added. When a sprightly girl asked his opinion on Chennai, he said that he liked the city. "... I love this city. I had been here, before 15 years ... "

Talking about his travelling experiences, he said India is a beautiful country and that he liked all States. The snow clad mountains and glaziers of Uttaranchal is his favourite, Mr. Barnala said. The children also got a glimpse of the Governor's career. Mr. Barnala said he was basically an agriculturist. After education, he became a lawyer and later took up politics. He held posts such as minister and chief minister before he became a Governor. Towards the end of the interaction, a curious girl wanted to know why he was wearing a turban. The Governor explained that the Sikh religion required him to wear a turban.

Mr. Barnala wished the children good health and success in life. Earlier, the children were taken around Raj Bhavan. S. Rajaram, general secretary of Sivananda Orphanage and C.K. Gariyali, secretary to Governor, were present.
