NEW DELHI: The Left parties on Wednesday condemned the terror acts in Mumbai and said the terrorists' aim of disrupting peace and communal harmony must be foiled. In view of the blasts, the parties decided to cancel the first part of the anti-price rise week from July 13 to 16. The programme will now be held from July 17 to 19. In a joint statement, the Left parties called upon their units to immediately organise meetings and silent processions to condemn the Mumbai blasts and to express the resolve of people to maintain unity and communal harmony. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) said the Mumbai blasts and Srinagar grenade attacks on Tuesday have been perpetrated by forces inimical to the country and people with a design to disrupt normal life and create social tensions. It was imperative to foil this heinous aim. This required the unity and determination of all sections of people. In a statement, the party's Polit Bureau said the Maharashtra Government and Central agencies must spare no effort in tracking down the perpetrators of this horrendous crime and take steps to eliminate the network sustaining the terrorist activities.
Prompt steps needed
The CPI (M) said it was extending full solidarity with the people of Mumbai and conveyed its deep sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives and suffered grievous injuries. The State Government and the Central authorities should take prompt and necessary steps to assist those affected by the bomb blasts. In a statement, the Communist Party of India said: "Life and security of people cannot be held to ransom by organised fanatic terrorists. All right thinking people will severely condemn these terrorist attacks and demand severe action against the perpetrators. Their inhuman attack on innocent people cannot deter the country." Condemning the attacks on tourist buses in Srinagar, the party said the attack showed the desperation of terrorists. The party called for demonstrations expressing resolve to fight terrorism and to maintain calm and peace. The CPI (ML) Liberation has demanded a speedy probe to identify those guilty. In a statement, it praised the citizens of Mumbai for displaying exemplary courage and humanity in the face of terror. "The same remarkable spirit will be tested in the days to come when people of Mumbai will have to be alert and vigilant to foil the attempts of communal political forces to fan a frenzied reaction to the blasts."
