Nieminen in quarterfinals

BASTAD : Jarkko Nieminen rallied from a set down to beat Lukas Dlouhy on Wednesday and became the first player to reach the quarterfinals at the Swedish Open. Nieminen won the second-round match 6-7(2), 6-0, 6-3.

Chile's Nicolas Massu also reached the last eight, beating Jose Acasuso of Argentina 6-4, 6-2.

Murray rallies to win

At Newport, top seed Andy Murray of Britain survived five match points before seeing off Brazil's Ricardo Mello 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(5) to reach the second round of the Hall of Fame tennis championship in Newport, Rhode Island on Tuesday.

Second-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and American third seed Paul Goldstein were not as fortunate, however, both suffering first round defeats.

Puerta's ban reduced

Argentinian tennis player Mariano Puerta's eight-year doping ban was reduced to two years on Wednesday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Puerta tested positive for the cardiac stimulant Etilefrine after losing to Rafael Nadal in the 2005 French Open final.

CAS, the world's highest court for sports disputes, ruled that Puerta had "inadvertently" ingested etilefrine by drinking from a glass his wife had used to take a medication called Efffortil.

Henin withdraws

The Belgium Fed Cup captain, Carl Maes said that Justine Henin-Hardenne has pulled out of the team for the semifinals against the United States saying she was exhausted and needed a rest going into the hard-court season.
