Chawla shines

DARWIN: Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla claimed five wickets as New Zealand `A', resuming at 257 for four, finished at 332 with Craig McMillan making a century on the second day of a four-day match in the Top End cricket series on Wednesday.

McMillan batted almost five and a half hours for his century which challenged the New Zealand selectors' decision to drop him last month from their list of 20 contracted players.

In reply, India `A' was 208 for six at stumps with Tamil Nadu skipper S. Badrinath (55) coming good after the top-order failed miserably.

Shane on song

Meanwhile, Shane Watson made his case for a Test recall when he smashed 161 not out for Australia `A' against Pakistan `A' on the second day of a four-day match in the Top End cricket series.

Australia `A' captain Brad Haddin made 129 and combined for 268 with Watson for the seventh wicket as Australia `A' declared at 510 for six after batting first.

The scores:

New Zealand `A' — 1st innings 332 (M. Papps 69, M. Sinclair 76, C. McMillan 108; Piyush Chawla five for 86) v India `A' — 1st innings 209 for six (S. Badrinath 55, R. Sharma 41 batting, T.P. Singh 41 batting).
