VIZIANAGARAM : The Municipal Council on Wednesday witnessed heated discussions on the delay in completing road-widening. Raising the issue during zero hour Telugu Desam Party councillors M. Chandrasekhar and A. Vasudev demanded a clarification from Chairperson M. Geethaon the extent of space to be acquired for road widening as differing reports were appearing in the media. They pointed out that, on a gentleman's agreement, shopowners from the stretch of the Three Lamps Junction to the Clock Tower demolished their structures on their own and handed over space to the administration for widening the road up to 60 feet.
Enforce orders
Quoting reports, the TDP councillors said a Government order (GO) was issued later permitting R&B officials to widen the road to 80 feet. The Chairperson said the road widening work suffered because a few shopowners were non-cooperative. The agreement would hold good only for owners who voluntarily removed structures, she said. The GO would be strictly enforced at places where the owners refused to co-operate with the administration. When the TDP councillors pointed out that the road alignment would suffer, the chairperson said a meeting with R&B officials would be convened next week to take a decision. Later, the council discussed sanitation and sanction of provident fund to retired teachers.
