Intake 100 each in

two medical colleges

BANGALORE: Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya has said that the proposed medical colleges in Belgaum and Mandya, which had been approved by the Union Government and the Medical Council of India, will have an intake of 100 each.

In a statement to the press, Dr. Acharya said work was going on apace on the construction of buildings of the other four government medical colleges (Hassan, Shimoga, Bidar and Raichur).

Earlier in the day, Dr. Acharya told the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that the Belgaum and Mandya colleges would admit students from the current academic year (2006-07) itself. — Special Correspondent

Development hit,

says Poojary

MANGALORE: Development has been affected under the BJP-Janata Dal (S) dispensation, alleged the former KPCC president B. Janardhana Poojary. Addressing a rally of Congress workers here on Wednesday, Mr. Poojary said that instead of focussing on development, Ministers were indulging in corrupt practices. He said that the charges made against the Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and C. Chennigappa, Minister for Forests, by a BJP MLC should be probed by the CBI.

Chief Minister to inaugurate bridge

BIJAPUR: The three-km Korthi-Kolhar bridge across the Krishna will be inaugurated on

July 16. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will inaugurate the super structure built at a cost of

Rs. 60 crore at Korthi in Bilagi taluk of Bagalkot district at 4.30 p.m. After that he will participate in the formal ceremony on the outskirts of Bilagi town.

According to the itinerary, the Chief Minister will arrive here by helicopter at 1.30 p.m. He is scheduled to open the bus terminus and the office of the District Consumers' Forum. — Staff Correspondent

Two arrested for

transporting tusks

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The Gundlupet forest officials have arrested two persons on the charge of transporting tusks from Mysore to Kerala illegally. One person managed to escape. The arrests were made on Tuesday.

The arrested persons have been identified as Chandra of Machchur village in H.D. Kote taluk and Aji of Thiruvanathapuram. The third accused to managed to escape has been identified as Sibi. — Correspondent

Gastroenterology update

Bangalore: The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Victoria Hospital (affiliated to the Bangalore Medical College) is organising a `National Surgical Gastroenterology Update' from July 14 to 16. The update includes a workshop and a continuing medical education programme on the "Diseases of the bowel," which will be held at the Basavarajendra auditorium on the Bangalore Medical College campus.

Co-opted

as member

Bangalore: K. Raghu, former chairman of the Southern India Regional Council of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, who belongs to Bangalore, has been co-opted as member of the Committee for Members in Industry of the Institute for 2006-07.

Mr. Raghu is the sixth person from Karnataka to have served as chairman of the Southern Regional Council of ICAI and he was also chairman of the Bangalore branch. The ICAI has more than 1.23 lakh members.

Veeranna Gowda

laid to rest

TUMKUR: N. Veeranna Gowda, former MLA for Gubbi and Congress leader, was laid to rest at Mavinahalli in Gubbi taluk of Tumkur district on Wednesday. He died in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Leaders of the Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party paid their last respects to Veeranna Gowda and recalled his services. Over 20,000 people from across the district attended the funeral. — Staff Correspondent
